Doomsday Clock Remains 90 Seconds to Midnight

There’s no snooze button on the Doomsday Clock. With the understanding that knowledge is key to collective survival, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists designed the metaphorical clock in 1947 to warn the public how close we are to destroying the planet. Since 1947, nuclear weapons have remained the greatest threat to our planet. That hasn’t changed today as the clock stays the closest to midnight it has ever been. The bulletin measures growing cataclysms to determine how close the hands of the clock are to midnight. Once the clock hits midnight, civilization presumably deteriorates into a state of no-return. To date, the Bulletin has reset the hand of the clock 25 times. In 2023, scientist moved the clock from 100 seconds to it’s current countdown of only 90 strokes to midnight.
What Are the Greatest Threats to Our Planet?
The development of nuclear weapons in WWII led to the clock’s creation. To give you an idea of how bad the geopolitical situation is on our planet, the scientists reset the clock to two minutes with the detonation of the hydrogen bomb and seven minutes during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1991, the clock was furthest from midnight at 17 minutes. The reason? The Soviet Union had fallen, ending the Cold War. Today, climate change and the prevailing wars in Europe and Middle East is accelerating the slow, ominous ticking. You know the current state of world affairs is spiraling out of control when the Bulletin’s website removes the paywall. Needless to say, scientists are more than a little worried about the planet.
What Can We Do to Turn Back the Doomsday Clock?
Don’t you wish the Doomsday Clock worked like Daylight Savings? We could just wait for the hour hand to fall back during natural seasonal transitions. Despite our proclivities of wanton procrastination, we can’t depend on a natural de-escalation to take place. Citizens of all governments need to pressure world leaders to take firm action against the dangers enveloping our beleaguered planet. Unfortunately, our leaders appear to be more concerned with hegemony to concern themselves with the real dangers facing humanity. With the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, many political scientists warn that we could already be in the early stages of WWIII.
How To Protect What Matters Most
We’ve said it before: you can’t rely on the federal government to bail us out of catastrophe. Remember the COVID pandemic? How many lives could the nation have saved if our leaders had taken quicker action, instead appeasing the more conspiracy-minded segment of the populace? But not all hope is lost. You can still protect your family against whatever driving factor is speeding up the hands of foreboding clock. Our economical aboveground safe rooms and shelters could be your best bet against impeding doom. Reinforced with solid gauge steel welds, our safe rooms will protect your loved ones or employees from nuclear attacks and chaotic weather events. Our aboveground shelters are just as strong as our underground models. The only difference? You’ll save thousands of dollars with a solid-weld steel safe room that can be installed in a fraction of the time it takes to bury an underground bunker.
