Earthquakes struck Northern California and Indonesia this week.

Earthquake Report

Northern California

The Northern California coast was jolted by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake on Thursday morning. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake occurred under the Pacific Ocean, about 100 miles from the Oregon border. The epicenter was relatively close to the surface at only 6 miles down, but was enough for residents in nearby Ferndale, California to feel the ground move. While the quake was strong, USGS mapping shows that it did not produce violent shaking on land.

Most people who felt the tremor described it as a heavy rolling wave, unlike the shocking jolts that accompanied a couple of earthquakes earlier this week, both of which measured in around magnitude 4.0.  Luckily, there were no damage or injuries reported. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, it was not strong enough to generate a destructive tsunami. Some people in San Francisco, Eureka, and the Sacramento Valley reported feeling the tremors.

Aceh Province, Indonesia

Indonesia was also struck by an earthquake, a shallow 6.5-magnitude quake that struck Wednesday morning in the Aceh province. At least 100 people were killed and 136 more were seriously injured, including women and children. Buildings, homes, and mosques collapsed as a result of the shaking. Additional medical personal have been sent to the region to assist in search and rescue efforts. It is feared that the death toll will continue to rise, so rescuers are working quickly and diligently to find and save as many victims as they can.

In 2004, Indonesia was struck by a severe earthquake and tsunami, killing more than 80,000 people and leaving millions homeless across the nation. People in the region are still traumatized by the thought of a tsunami. Many fled to the hills for safety even after it was announced that there was no tsunami warning.
